The view is spectacular; having been on the London Eye and not impressed with the view, I wasn't expecting much from the Hutong vista, but have to say, it was impressive, so thank goodness for this redeeming factor because the food was sadly very average, so average I forgot what I ordered. I do remember being there for lunch on a Sunday, so it was mainly dim sum that we had, forgettable dim sum, although 2 dishes stand out, the Hutong spicy fried rice was superb, so delicious, but at £12 (I think) for a small portion (size of a rice bowl), expensive, and this was one of the ‘cheapest’ a la carte items. And wagyu beef puff was very delicious too, and again, expensive. Here's another thing I have to say, ‘wagyu’ beef in a small puff is just wrong. Its merely a reason for the establishment to whack up the price and make itself sound like its in the know. The pastry was buttery and flaky, the filling yummy, but you couldn't tell if it were wagyu beef or Findus mince, so you'll have to take their word and cough up. So you see, the two outstanding dishes come with gripes attached. At these prices, they should stand on its own unimpeachable merit.
Service was ok, a bit slow for my liking, especially if you're a regular at Royal China, where food flies out of the kitchen and its up to customers to catch them. Actually, it was incredibly slow, I feebly complained twice, they apologised (twice) and blamed it on some big group I had the misfortune of dining with on the same day. Again, at these prices, I should've had my own butler.
I found the decor underwhelming, which is fine because the views more than make up for it, but the chairs were awkward; a family member who has serious back problems said it was fantastic for his back, I don't have a back problem, it was unfantastic for me.
I guess I'd visit again, quite easily if someone else was paying, if not, I'd only order the spice fried rice and make sure I sit by the window.
