First the positives. Thank you Hutong for a fantastic view and meal to celebrate my wife's birthday. Unfortunately the ending of the experience has just ruined it completely which means we will never come back!
The soft shell crab was so huge a serving that the two of us could not finish it. Not wanting to waste such yummy food, we asked if we could take this away. We were promptly advised that it is forbidden as a policy to take this away.
When I mentioned (to the maitre d or sommelier or whatever role he had) that we did this at Min Jiang (at Royal Garden Hotel), this guy said (and I kid you not) . . . “I don't know what they do down in Chinatown but we don't do this sort of thing at this kind of establishment and I have also worked at Hakkasan and this was not done either!” @ min jiang, good to know they think you are a little chinatown restaurant!
Secondly, as a Chinese Australian Brit, you will never get rid of the “not wanting to waste food” mentality that has been instilled in me by my parents from a young age – no matter how westernised you want to present your establishment. Shame on you!
To be fair, the manager resolved the situation in the end with both common sense and common courtesy (thank you).
Word of advice – don't forget your roots. You are after all, a Chinese restaurant no matter what your Michelin-starred aspirations!
