Lovely contemporary Indian restaurant with interesting food and relaxing atmosphere. We enjoyed it before and went there again this weekend. There's an extensive menu but we decided to focus on fish.
Prawns to start were large and tasty with spices, baked so slightly crispy outside but juicy within. The home made cottage cheese stuffed with spiced dates and figs, served in quarters like a sandwich, was also baked in the tandoor and with a little zingy tamarind sauce was very good. Main course dishes were salmon tikka, a generous sized dish of pieces of fish, and turbot baked in paper – the fish was light and delicate, served with quite a rich creamy fennel and garlic sauce. Sides included roasted cauliflower and grilled mini aubergine, and a pilau rice.
The menu descriptions are good and include the region. All are spiced but not particularly hot, and there are non of the gloopy generic curry-house oily sauces which can be so off-putting at many Indian restaurants. The food tasted fresh and individual. And also unlike many curry-houses where you just want to eat and leave, we were comfortable sitting chatting, and finishing off the bottle of wine. If you're in Belsize Park it's worth a visit.
