When you eat at Harrods you expect to pay through the nose. You might also expect the quality to be commensurate with the price. When we ate at Pan Chai we were proved painfully right on the first point and woefully wrong on the second. We managed to snag 2 seats at the counter fairly easily but as time went by with lines forming it was clear we'd been lucky on that front. It was also clear we had been lucky to get two seats with a protective plastic shield behind: the impatient and the curious (which Harrods seems to attract in hordes) constantly leant over our neighbours to see what they were eating and what was in the counters in front of us. Not very relaxing. When our vision had cleared from viewing the eye-watering prices on the menu (£4.50 for a small Coke?!), we ordered vegetarian sushi rolls for him, californian sushi rolls for me and some edamame. The sushi, particularly the vegetarian, was dire: the seaweed sheet in the rolls was soggy making each roll a very chewy mouthful; the rice was also sloppy and over-wet; the avocado rolls were just a bit of avocado rolled up with no attempt whatsoever to add any interest with maybe, wild suggestion, a bit of carrot or something; the wasabi overpowering. Sushi chefs in Japan would be horrified. We did eat them because we were desperately hungry, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. Service was reasonably friendly but my feedback at the end of the meal was clearly baffling to the waitress (clearly not expecting an actual answer to the question of how our meal was) although she dutifully smiled and promised to tell the chef. For these grubby few rolls, the beans and 2 soft drinks we paid £45. Probably the worst value meal I've had in London in 18 years.
