Our first visit to a full restaurant on a midweek lunchtime, with a mix of business and “civilian” clientele. We looked at the tasting menu and decided that this was our choice since the variety and apparent interest in the dishes made us a little reluctant to miss out on anything. There's a few points to make.
I ate eight courses, my wife seven. Seven courses of freshly prepared food of this quality for £59 is good value. When you add to that the very reasonable wine list , coffee etc I think there's a lot worse being sold around London for a lot more, and Mr Dabbous is clearly investing in his brand. I'm thinking that maybe the tiny portions of cheese might have been a little larger for the £9 surcharge.
The premises are kind of “industrial” and look rather nice. I have no idea whether much of this is genuine or “made to order”. Service is timely and friendly enough and different people kept popping up to serve, so no extended dialogues with the waitstaff here. They don't pour your wine and I have no issue with that.
Of the food we ate there wasn't a single dish that wasn't presented very nicely, wasn't tasty, and where you could suggest credibly that the cooking wasn't right. We preferred some courses to others, but everything was at least very good indeed. We both agreed that the first course served, peas with mint was superb . I might just make the point that they didn't serve a lot of meat ( one course) or fish (one course) and personally. given a choice, I'd drop the number of vegetable-based courses before the fish and meat from 3 to 2 with one extra meat or fish. Can't help it, I'm a carnivore. The single meat serving- barbecued Iberico pork- was not in our view the highlight of the meal.
But overall this was one of the best meals we've eaten this year and we did what I suspect a lot of people do, which is to book our next visit at the desk as we left. This is a seriously good restaurant.
