Winter is not when Le Coq flaunts all its wares given the large al fresco areas, however it does a damn fine job of trying. The alpine themed menu works on a cold February day with Crozets, Tartiflette and Fondue all parading themselves across a short but delightfully thought through menu.
The Lobster Bisque was very rich – perhaps the additional creme fraiche an overstatement – but delicious all the same. The crab cocktail was well executed and well balanced with green leaves, spicy tomato jelly and brown meat mayonnaise.
For the mains, grilled salmon with spinach was superbly succulent and the confit cassoulet a triumph and delicious to the last.
Carafes of 500cl of Muscadet from the Loire and another of Cab Sav from the Languedoc left us feeling very spoilt and wonderfully sated. Coffee outside on the sheepskins and blankets surrounded by the alpine decor was very relaxing and a perfect way to finish.
The team at Coq d'Argent should be proud of all they have achieved and keep on achieving. I was surprised by the inspiration and innovation they continue to demonstrate with such an established name. I highly recommend the journey!
