Visitors to the Carnaby/ Kingley street area of London are not short of culinary options. Even on the sunny lunchtime last week when two of us visited Cha Cha Moon for the first time, and the main criterion for choosing a restaurant beyond its location was the ability to sit outdoors, there exist many other nearby alternatives. Fine dining this is not, but if you’re after cheap and cheerful, efficient and quick and Chinatown is too far to walk, then Cha Cha Moon mostly ticks the box. My dining comrade somewhat unfairly likened Cha Cha to a ‘Chinese version of Wagamamma’ and while there are some similarities in terms of communal benches for seating and speed of service, the food is considerably better at the former, with the dishes we sampled at Cha Cha being fairly light and certainly lacking that unhealthy greasy feeling all too common at Wagamamma. I began with a competently executed, pleasantly crispy Chinese calamari accompanied with basil, while my comrade opted for the crispy chilli beef, another success. The mains also passed muster, but my Singapore noodles suffered from being somewhat bland, needing to be augmented by the chilli sauce on the table. Portion sizes are generous (particularly given the £8 price tag; almost none of the mains top £10 in price), but I would have preferred slightly more of an emphasis on quality over quantity. The only other problem – as we were informed by our server – is that dishes come from the kitchen when they ready; fine if you are sharing in a large group, but with just two of us, one had to watch the other eat, while my comrade’s starter arrived after his main. Conclusion: go if you fancy this sort of food and you’re in the area, but certainly don’t make a special effort to seek Cha Cha Moon out…
