Having fallen for Union st cafe, I thought it was time to give relative old timer (for London) Gordon Ramsey's Bread st kitchen a go. The location is in the city so after commuters clear out for the weekend, this area can be like a ghost town. Although, on a saturday night, this place was buzzing. This is a mega watt 2 storey, high end warehouse restaurant/bar with a similar industrial chic feel as Union st. The difference here is that the service was curt, grumpy and lacked finesse. The next problem is the food. There is a ridiculously long menu with a huge variation in cuisine, from pizzetas (nearly a full size pizza although was a starter), calamari, scallops, ceviche, pastas, different fish, loads of different meats. There was just too much choice. From my memory Gordon's ethos is all about good ingredients, refined limited menus and exceptional service. What happened here? or has it just become slack over the last 2 years? Every dish was at the most average. The surf and turf for £33 had a few bouncy bits of lobster and a very chewy bland steak. Scallops as a main were the most miniature scallops I have ever seen. Chunky chips were just chunky and chalky and did not provide that carb hit. My white fish with capers and brown butter was over greasy and unappetising. Prices do add up as well.
All in all, we had a good night (partly due to excessive fizz and good wine), but I wouldn't go back with so many other exciting restaurants to try in London right now. Gordon, you need to come back and sort this place out Gordon style.
