…is what you'll find here in every sense of the word. An exemplary outfit, where staff are charming and who actually seem to enjoy their work. Comforting food is served in comfortable surroundings where the atmosphere is welcoming. Drinks arrived promptly, swiftly followed by the sour dough we just had to order and it was so well worth it. I chose the hot crab dish of three delectable soft shelled variety presented simply and perfectly balanced with the exact amount of young coriander shoots to enhance plus the requisite pot of aioli. Charcuterie was excellent and generously portioned. Duck a l'orange, with frites side came next and my daube of beef arrived simultaneously with creamy mashed potato and a broccoli side order. Faultless cooking was enjoyed again including the chips. The softest beef had an incredibly deep, rich flavour lifted by the olives and acidity from what I think were sun-dried tomatoes. I didn't expect artichoke hearts and I assume was part of the provencale style. I happily ate it all and managed to make a significant dent into the potato puree. We chose a Languedoc wine that pleased us both which was placed very near us allowing the option to help ourselves – we didn't need to. By this time, I was full, but one rum baba was ordered and served with Chantilly cream. It disappeared with ease although a more alcoholic version would have been preferred, probably saying more about the preference of the individual – maybe a miniature liqueur pot could be requested to adjust, but I didn't think to suggest to my man at the time. Cost was not eye-wateringly Mayfair and has to be repeated, so with all these good things in mind and some great food inside us, we took our 25 minute walk back sufficiently fuelled to face the cold Saturday night air.
