Balthazar London has finally landed (fancy French brasserie, original in NY). Tables are virtually impossible to get at a reasonable time ie (6-9pm sitting), anyway i settled for a 530pm table. The trick is to ring exactly 30 days in advance at 9am for best tables. So is it worth the effort? The answer a big fat yes, not so much for the food, which is good enough but the London buzz. This is the first new London restaurant that has excited me for ages, so much so, that i have booked it again (at 7pm yippee in 30 days time!!) with hubbie. Balthazar is positioned bang in touristy covent garden central, but enter through the doors and be whisked away to Spring St NY, for a cacophony of London's best. The facts: opulant brasserie style dining hall, cosy booths, a brigade of starched white shirted waiters and fab service. My husband has always said the ambience is just as important as the food, i always said 60%:40% the other way but in this case, i reluctantly agree. The food is classic French fare… Coq au vin, steak frites, bouillabaisse.. I had an urn full of onion soup smothered in melted cheese, croutons, and a deep rich oniony taste.. v filling. The star was the rhubarb crumble soufflé with creme anglais, light, fluffy, magnificent, perfect. Also don't forget there are real stars in this joint… Helena b carter and her hubbie and a certain girls aloud member were present, adding to the frisson.
