Arbutus was the start of a new wave foodie casual bistro with a Michelin star. What it has now become is a very noisy and busy 20 something hangout with, at best, average food and quick turnover of tables. Food is nowhere near Michelin standard and there is not even a pretense of any WOW factor. This is a very mediocre eatery which I would suggest is avoided in favour of the many new restaurants in the area.
Our starter of ravioli arrived within 10 minutes of order – cold. It would seem they are so eager to get you out that the food is largely pre-made. Main course was starter size and lacked any interest at all. A silver mullet dish with a variety of oddities thrown on — including cold mussels – which detracted from the fish. The rose wine arrived warm and the caraffe was slammed on the table. Our server -German I think – had severe attitude which bordered on insolence. We had her removed from serving us. The manager who took over was fine and helpful, correcting the many issues they had created.
In the past one of the owners – Will Smith – held court in the restaurant and it ran very well, with charm. Now he is to be seen spread thin over the other 2 restaurants in the group – deux salon & Wild Honey – with the resulting drop in standards. As a customer of the other 2 restaurants, I can confirm that in the case of Deux salon the standard has dropped to little better than cafe rouge on a bad day.
Will – sort all this out !!!
