We desperately wanted to love this restaurant – the concept was very appealing – but in reality this place just reinforced how nice my own home cooked food is!! Avoid if you have any expectations of decent food and possess taste buds. We happened to be passing, and were hungry. There were no diners inside but the menu seemed appealing to us life long veges and we were swiftly seated. They said they had only opened two weeks ago (it's the sister restaurant in New Oxford St, W1). I was happy to have stumbled across an organic, vegetarian restaurant – a winning combination i thought! The interior was nicely done and the fact that they have wholesome vegetables and Italian products out on display was lovely. We went for the set menu and ordered some sides.
The country soup was quite horrible, large chunky vegetables in a small bowl, bouillon but not enough seasoning, the taste was just not nice. The chips were so dripping in oil that i had to personally dry them off with a napkin! I did mention this to the waiter & Pasquale who had come with the oil soaked chips to our table to introduce himself and they just laughed and said no they are not cooked in too much oil! The salad was ok, some leaves, endive and orange slices. The lasagne was disgusting, overcooked, stodgy and warm, not hot plus cold in the middle. We could not eat it. Vegetable sides also cooked for too long so retaining no bite. The desert was inedible too, a load of cream on top of some kind of strange spongy biscuit with some pretentious presentation swirls?? The olives and chilli oil were the best things we ate (mainly to remove the horrible tastes from our mouths)!
To be honest i do not remember ever having eaten such awful food! I do not believe that these people really know anything about vegetarian/organic or Italian food, nor cook with a gram of love – it must just be a commercial venture attempting to fit in a niche market. I tried to feedback about our experience, as we really, really wanted it to be what it said it was. However the waiter made some snide comments about how many satisfied regular customers they have (wow!) and I then actually spoke to Pasquale ("head chef) after the meal to communicate my issues and he brazenly denied all of my criticism, saying “you cannot make lasagne al-dente” and when i asked if the meal had been pre- made and then heated in a microwave as it was stone cold in the middle he told me “all food is freshly prepared and cooked in our oven” – that was not digestible as the truth either. Maybe sensing that there would be minimal or no tip, they added on a service charge without any prior indication on the menu or otherwise.
I mean on the table they were advertising cooking courses with Pasquale Amico for £115 – “learn to cook the Amico Bio way”, what hilarity! Sadly we won't be returning unless they themselves go and learn how to cook properly!
