Square Meal review of EH2 Tempus:
The George Hotel is a venerable old stager, a listed Georgian building that has lately enjoyed a £12 million refurbishment. Part of the makeover resulted in the summer 2006 launch of EH2 Tempus, a bar/restaurant that is certainly part of the George, but with its own separate identity. It's a spacious room with large-scale modernist paintings, dark wood, & the odd sumptuous flourish – aristocratic 19th-century decor updated for the informality of the 21st century. This is reflected in the bistro-hearty food where an elaborate three courses could start with Loch Fyne oysters with shallot vinegar & Tabasco, then grilled tuna with spiced lentils or steak & chips, finishing off with a goblet of summer fruits doused in pink Champagne, with vanilla ice-cream. The wine list is around 40 strong, has useful notes, & over half is pegged at £25 or under.
