Square Meal review of Morgans Hotel:

Morgans Hotel occupies a delightful building, once the offices of the Port Authority. A sympathetic & inspired conversion has preserved the best of the old while creating a sleek, stylish boutique hotel. Start the evening in the large downstairs lounge, where manly modern armchairs & bare floorboards are overseen by high ceilings &, behind the bar, a wall filled with wine bottles. There’s an informal dining option downstairs but the main restaurant is up two candle-lit flights of stairs in what was once the boardroom – a distinguished, wood-floored room where the cooking is competent & comfortably familiar. Typical dishes include Welsh fillet steak with dauphinois potatoes, braised red cabbage, red wine jus & peppercorn butter; seared salmon & crushed new potatoes with a pesto & balsamic dressing; & loin of pork in a light mustard sauce. Desserts plough a similar furrow with the likes of bread & butter pudding; creme brulee & fruit crumble. Service is both friendly & knowledgeable.
