Honley is deep in Last of the Summer Wine country, & Mustard & Punch is squeezed between a hairdresser & a corner shop. But forget Norah Batty’s wrinkled stockings – there’s an air of quiet sophistication in the dining room with its gleaming wood & dark red walls, & honest, thoughtful food. Award-winning butcher Lishman’s black pudding is brought to the table with bubble & squeak, or there’s smoked haddock with herb gnocchi & parmesan; rich & sticky lamb shank sitting atop swede & carrot mash with rosemary basting juices; & pan-roasted pheasant breast with fondant potato, cabbage, bacon & onion sauce. If you’ve got room, sticky toffee pudding with liquorice ice-cream makes you shudder with pleasure – in fact the whole M&P experience is gratifyingly warm & unpretentious.
