Tony Tobin’s new restaurant is injecting buzz & sophistication into its surburban village setting of Banstead. Situated in the former post office, the enterprise comprises a 50-seat fine-dining room, a 100-seat all-day brasserie & a deli, which sells the same bread, olive oils, charcuterie & cheeses served in the eateries. While the first-floor fine diner serves modern British food similar to that Tobin – of Ready, Steady, Cook fame – has been producing at The Dining Room in Reigate for the past 10 years, customers here have a choice of three tasting menus only. All comprise eight courses & are priced at £28, £35 & £41. Powerfully flavoured roasted salt cod with lobster mash & lemon oil; free-range guinea fowl with celeriac puree, caramelised apples & juniper; & some perfectly ripe cheeses were highlights of our meal. In the brasserie, meanwhile, food & service are more relaxed, with fish & chips offered alongside braised shoulder of lamb with pesto mash, & wood-roasted salmon with crushed potatoes, olives & tomatoes. There’s also a good selection of pastas, risottos & pizzas, as well as an excellent choice of freshly prepared dishes for children. A selection of organic baby food is available free of charge with the only downer being slow service at busy times. Note: prices & times above are for the brasserie.
