This tip-top setting is just the place to show off England’s heritage: a pretty, rural Wiltshire village with a Georgian coaching inn that has been sympathetically & stylishly renovated – & just an easy couple of miles off the A303, to boot. The Angel has everything you could want from such a place – beams, massive flagstones, clattering floorboards, log fires, deep sofas & chunky wood tables – which makes for a pleasant environment. On the food front, pub favourites such as steak, fat chips, a posh version of shepherds’s pie & homecooked ham ploughman’s, are mixed in with saddle of venison with vanilla-infused poached plum sauce or sea bass with fondant potato, baby spinach & dill sauce.
