Valvona & Crolla started as a delicatessen back in 1934, thrived and survived, then branched out into the caffe-bar business in 1996 at its original premises in Elm Row. This proved such a success that in 2004 the owners took matters one step further and opened the VinCaffe just off St Andrew's Square. This offers light meals, wines and coffees on the ground floor, but upstairs it operates more as a formal restaurant (pork and beef meatballs in rich sugo to start; gorgonzola and courgette pizza as a main; wicked desserts if you can manage). It prides itself on good ingredients, put together well, with an award-winning selection of Italian wines and a steadfast no smoking policy throughout.
