Square Meal review of The Angel:
Here's a fine example of that most British of modern culinary phenomena: the village pub remade as a gastronomic destination. And how sympathetically the Angel has been transformed. It still retains a public bar, complete with bar menu, but even this has a luxurious feel, the usual pub furnishings being largely replaced by comfy sofas. The restaurant, with its bare wooden floors, well-spaced tables & understated country house decor, is smart & uncluttered yet reassuringly traditional; likewise, the staff are smart, slightly formal, but friendly. Co-proprietor Rod Peterson (a former Welsh Chef of the Year) is an assured, technically excellent cook & local ingredients underpin most of his creations. You could begin with a ravioli of duck with sweet pepper compote, followed perhaps by monkfish with a souffle of Taleggio cheese, or braised shoulder of Welsh lamb with beetroot, raisins, mash & a minted yogurt sauce.
