Looking particularly handsome since its revamp, the Great House summons up pleasing thoughts of France in the heart of medieval Lavenham. Ancient timbers blend with muted colours & modern art, while friendly staff add to the mood of relaxed sophistication. Husband & wife Regis & Martine Crepy play perfect hosts to an appreciative crowd of cosmopolitan locals, here for French cooking that comes with plenty of modern flourishes. Flavours & textures are perfectly judged: slices of home-cured Barbary duck breast are enlivened by a marinade of walnut oil & rosemary, steamed fillet of wild turbot comes with a sesame crust, while gloriously tender roast saddle of venison is well matched by beetroot & Dijon mustard sauce. Puddings, such as exemplary warm dark chocolate & hazelnut torte with zingy red orange sorbet are a must, although there’s a splendid cheeseboard too. Wine lovers will find solace in the generously priced list.
