Here’s a country pub to test the capabilities of your sat nav, so hidden down twisting country lanes that it’s best to get directions too. An appealing place with welcoming service, the Five Horseshoes has been brought up to date without stripping it of character, so expect a beamed & timbered bar with an open fire & blood-red walls, & a rustic restaurant with chunky wood tables & magnificent Chiltern views. The kitchen brings a ‘match the food with the view’ philosophy to the table with a range of dishes made from well-sourced, often local, ingredients. Starters include a punchy plate of home-smoked organic salmon with salmon tartare, beetroot & horseradish, followed by roast sirloin with potato & summer truffle terrine topped with roasted bone marrow, & to finish a richly glutinous chocolate mousse with ground malt & peanut. During wintertime the menu focuses on game, while the lovely beer garden is the perfect spot for when the weather takes a turn for the better.
