A bit of a Bath institution, Demuths is a real hidden gem (just off Abbey Green) with the feel of a place that’s frequented only by those in the know. Its bright, bold decor reflects the attitude of the kitchen, which produces imaginative, interesting, good-value cooking – that just happens to be vegetarian. Meat eaters shouldn’t be put off, however, as menus are packed with goodies such as starters of smoked cheese polenta with tomato, olive & caper sauce & grilled artichoke heart, or Cajun tofu brochettes, including mushrooms, cherry tomatoes & courgettes & served with a satay sauce. Main courses range from sweet potato cauliflower gratin, to wild garlic & nettle soufflé with Somerset Ramblers ewes cheese & a salad of watercress, beetroot & puy lentils with a watercress & avocado coulis. All come in large portions.
