Square Meal review of The American Bar:
Crossing to the Continent from Portsmouth? Then head for this quayside bar fifty metres from the Wight ferry terminal and opposite the fish market; the proximity to the latter greatly influences the menu. Very fresh fish is chalked up on the daily changing board, but there’s also a printed menu offering the likes of twice-cooked pork belly with Oriental chow mein or coriander and chilli-crusted lamb with pea puree. Cooking takes a straightforward approach, as does the compact wine list, and there’s a friendly and accommodating atmosphere. Both menus are served in the bar and conservatory restaurant at lunch and in the evening with a simpler choice offered from noon to 6pm – good-value classics like beer-battered haddock and chips, sausage and mash, or homemade burgers.
