Square Meal review of The Star Inn:

A star in every sense, this is less of a gastropub & more of a fully-fledged industry – there’s a shop & B&B, too. But the pub is the hub & an absolute model of its kind. The building looks as if it has always been here, & it has. Sort of. Since the 14th century, anyway. The interior is warm & welcoming, the beer is beautiful, the service is immensely cheery & the food listed on daily changing blackboards absolutely top bloody notch. Not top-notch fancy but top-notch tasty, big & bonny. It’s inventive stuff, to be sure, but it keeps within sensible limits – risottos, black pudding with foie gras, breast of local wood pigeon with homecured corned beef hash & posh fish pie. There’s a cracking wine list – with useful food match suggestions – & when you’ve finished you can pop over the road to shop for more food. There’s good alfresco choices too, with some outside tables on the sheltered front terrace as well as in the garden with its shady fruit trees and the odd chicken running around.
