Square Meal review of Tatlers:
This most English of townhouses is set in the fashionable Tombland quarter (Norwich’s night spot). By day there is almost a French boulevard feel with people watching over the tree-lined hill street through shuttered windows. Inside it’s all heritage hues, stripped floors & bare tables with simple place settings & crisp napkins, a perfect backdrop for chef Brendan Ansbro’s colourful yet restrained cooking. Notable is the quality of raw ingredients, well understood spicing & a unique blend of global influences – his years at some of the region’s best stoves have given him the skills to pull off a punchy menu. His enterprising repertoire starts from a North European base & tours the Far East via the Mediterranean & South America. Most enjoyable are the palate-tingling dishes at the gutsier end of the spectrum, perhaps Chinese belly pork with Szechuan fried aubergine, wok seared potatoes & pak choi; Indian spice-rubbed whole local plaice with pickled vegetables, Indian raita, onion salad & lime; or Norfolk cockle salad with hijiki seaweed, cucumber, slow cooked shitake, wasabi & shiso cress.
