Square Meal review of The Harrow at Little Bedwyn:
Don’t be misled by the name. The Harrow is actually a full-blown country restaurant, not some timeless local, & a place with serious ambition – testified by the award of Michelin star. Just as surprising is that such an acclaimed outfit should be secreted away in an off-the-beaten-track village on the Kennet & Avon Canal. The interior affirms its true credentials, with a bright, stylish palette of sunny Mediterranean colours, high-backed leather chairs & crisp white linen creating an intimate dining space with a relaxed, unstuffy vibe. Chef-patron Roger Jones’s accomplished modern approach comes driven by fresh seasonal ingredients & free-range produce, & there’s a strong nod toward fish here, with day-boat catches landed at Brixham. His array of menus offer useful by-glass suggestions for each course; take fillets of line-caught Dover sole served with wild mushrooms & mash perhaps partnered by Brokenwood Voignier 2003, while the list itself is an oenophile’s delight with a notable strength in Rioja & some quite serious vintages at reasonable prices.
