This unassuming country pub gets the thumbs-up all round & customers appreciate everything about the place, from its soothing all-wood rooms to the warm ambience in winter & tables outside for summer drinking. The kitchen seems to know its limitations (& its customers) & wisely stays with what it does best – honest food, carefully sourced, beautifully cooked. Fishcakes, sausage & mash & bavette of beef are good-value offerings at lunch, while the more ambitious carte deals in foie gras & chicken liver parfait with Armagnac prunes or braised belly of pork with lentils & savoy cabbage. Shepherd Neame ales are on tap, & there’s a decent list of international wines.
