It may look like just another pretty country local set in a tiny hamlet of honey-coloured Cotswold stone, but the savvy flock here to dine rather than prop up the bar these days. And, while it may have been opened-up inside, there’s still oodles of rustic charm & informality, with beams, flagstones, oak flooring & even a big inglenook to catch the eye. But it’s the kitchen’s confident, unfussy, imaginative modern cooking that proves the main draw, driven by quality seasonal produce. Take a loin of tuna served with oven-dried tomatoes & tapenade, or perhaps a chump of lamb accompanied by aubergines flavoured with fenugreek, turmeric & ginger, & to finish, maybe a roasted peach & passion fruit parfait with almond tuille. The mish-mash of wood furniture, wine & food chalkboards, plus a no-bookings policy & food ordered at the bar, further enhance the Churchill’s unpretentious pubby roots & relaxed style.
