This is one of Edinburgh’s destination restaurants & the guest book reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood & Scottish politics & industry. With its beams, oak panelling & candles, it looks like a hugely atmospheric baronial pile that has been transported into the heart of the city & is a favourite for romantic liaisons as well as business lunches. The food relies on letting flavours shine through rather than over complicated dishes. Think roasted pigeon with braised celeriac, sautéd ceps & sauce d’epice, or a dozen Lindisfarne oysters, followed by red leg partridge en cocotte, steak tartare, or grilled whole lemon sole, with dark chocolate torte with milk chocolate sorbet to finish. The wine list is exemplary.
