Square Meal Review of Restaurant James Sommerin ?

Famed for his Michelin-starred cooking at The Crown at Whitebrook, chef James Sommerin is now going it alone in a new venture on the redeveloped Esplanade at Penarth. Occupying a grand Edwardian building with an iconic frontage, the dining room includes lots of personally chosen artefacts, deep purple tones and a feature wall made from local slate. The food revolves around a series of tasting menus with evocative Welsh names such as ‘clogwyn’ (cliff), all showcasing Sommerin’s distinctive take on high-end cuisine with its ample use of Welsh ingredients and eye for exquisite detailing – think monkfish with seaweed, grilled leek, curry and puffed grains or a combo of duck, lavender, beetroot, soy and cumin, followed by desserts such as banana, stout, toffee and macadamia nut. Nine boutique guest rooms (some with sea views) are due to open in the near future.
