With its neon sign and prominent roadside pitch on the edge of the Bruntsfield Links, this tiny down-home steakhouse and American diner has become one of the Southside’s best-known eateries. Owners Kate and Geoff Ness have found a winning formula and are happy to keep things just as they are, even if the size of the place has its obvious drawbacks. The food is consistently good, with char-grilled Scottish steaks taking pole position on the menu, backed by various sauces and flavourings (honey mustard, garlic butter, ‘seven pepper’ etc). There are also 10 kinds of burger and various comforting alternatives such as blackened chicken salad, Cajun salmon with coleslaw and chips or BBQ chicken and bacon melt. Katie’s Diner is licensed and the wine is cheap, but you can also BYO (£2 corkage).
