Set up by the two brothers who co-founded Ollie Couillard’s Lawn Bistro in Wimbledon, this brasserie-style restaurant aims to brings some metropolitan pizzazz to Watford’s regenerated Parade. Done out in Gallic style with banquettes, muted colours and polished wood, Bread Butter & Grill deals in accessible Euro-accented dishes from smoked duck salad and sea bream with crushed potatoes, pak choy, mango and coriander salsa to burgers and rib-eye steak with hand-cut chips – plus desserts such as a signature bread-and-butter pudding. Afternoon tea is a daytime bonus, home-baked breads and unusual flavoured butters are true to the restaurant’s moniker, and the wine list offers plenty of sound drinking by the glass or carafe. There’s a private dining room downstairs, and the venue’s enclosed alfresco space overlooks a ‘village pond’ on the pedestrianized High Street.
