Square Meal Review of The Gateway Restaurant ?

Part of the stunningly designed John Hope Gateway visitor building within Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden (RBGE), this glassed-in eatery overlooks the Biodiversity Garden – in fact the kitchen gets many of its fresh ingredients, herbs and vegetables from the RBGE’s Edible Gardening Project. Breakfast is always a good call, but the restaurant does most of its business at lunchtime when the menu mixes deli sandwiches, salads and classics such as beer-battered hake with the likes of Shetland smoked salmon strewn with wild flower petals, fish of the day with giant couscous or lamb neck fillet marinated in ras-el-hanout with Moroccan spiced aubergine, chickpea and apricot salad. Afternoon tea (from 2.30pm) is also a great treat with its line-up of finger sandwiches, scones, cakes, sponges and meringues – all washed down with a glass of Prosecco if you wish.
