Square Meal Review of The Red Lion ?

Several stunning walks start and end at this picture-perfect pub, which scores highly on several counts: it sits prettily on the oak-dappled village green, its 18th-century interior is an appealing mix of stone floors, open fires and a series of cosy, wood-panelled rooms, and friendly, local staff serve up honest, value-for-money dishes based on regional produce. Rabbit pie, chicken, leek and bacon casserole or ham and eggs are proper plates of food and just what you need after a morning on the moors. Puds continue the homely theme, notably the renowned sticky toffee pud and treacle sponge with custard. In the spring, a million daffodils fringe the green; sit outside under the trees with a pint of Abbeydale Absolution (from Sheffield) or Wild Swan from the Thornbridge Brewery near Bakewell.
