Judging by the celeb photo gallery, you’re in good company at this long-standing Edinburgh Indian just a stroll from Haymarket station – rock stars, movie icons, Scottish rugby heroes and others have all been snapped at Verandah. Despite its high profile, the mood in the restaurant is reassuringly intimate and low key, with tropical timber blinds, wicker chairs and wall hangings preferred to flock-wallpaper clichés. The menu covers a lot of familiar North Indian and Bangladeshi territory, with tandooris much in evidence alongside specialities such as chicken chasni massalam (kebabs in a delicate sauce with a touch of mango and pickle) or aloo ghost (lamb and potatoes with garlic and herbs). High-street stalwarts such as samosas, bhunas and dhansaks also have their say, and all-inclusive thalis are good value. The innovative wine list is several notches above the curry house norm.
