Square Meal review of The Dogs:
Dave’s back. Having run the estimable fitz(Henry) in Leith & the ambitious Rogue on Morrison Street, restaurateur Dave Ramsden’s latest Edinburgh venture is a first-floor New Town diner. It’s a far simpler proposition than his previous establishments: old-style British cooking with starters & puds all under a fiver, most mains less than a tenner & the vast majority of wines under £20. Tables are squeezed together (someone putting on a coat is liable to drop a sleeve in your pickled walnuts), while the most obvious design concession is a massive picture of a dog’s head behind the bar. When full, the decibel levels rise. Most people seem content with straightforward dishes like mutton broth or ham hock terrine to start, boiled salt beef with root vegetables & dumplings as a main, then marmalade bread & butter pudding for afters. Cheap, cheerful & quietly hip – just don’t expect precision cuisine.
