Adam Myers & Katie Martin are the enthusiastic couple behind this rather ordinary-looking pub in a two-street Yorkshire Wolds village; the interior may not set your pulse racing, but take a look at the menu, & you’ll realise why you’ve made the journey. Adam puts seasonal, local ingredients to good use: how about slow-roasted belly pork & black pudding salad, or chorizo, chicken & halloumi skewers for £5.50? To follow, chunky cod on Cheddar mash with leek & smoked bacon cream is a fragrant plateful, or go for the sublime potato, leek & courgette frittata on rocket salad. Apple crumble with custard is cooked to order. Katie runs front of house with cheerfulness & verve, pulling pints of Banks’s Bitter & waiting at tables. The pub now has its own cricket, dominoes & darts teams – a sure sign that there’s new life in this once-tired old boozer.
