An air of casual affluence runs through this convivial country house, which dates from the 15th century and enthusiastically mixes Tudor, Georgian, Victorian & modern classic styles to create a rich decorative mix. In the Knightley Restaurant, tables are well spaced and covered in crisp napery with well-upholstered chairs matching the comfortable surrounds. While the setting might hark back to earlier times, the cooking is resolutely 21st century, with classic combinations interpreted in a contemporary manner. Cornish crab with confit tomato and avocado, or pot-roasted, red-legged partridge with braised lentils, girolles & smoked bacon, for example, with apple pie parfait & green apple sorbet to finish. For something simpler go for light eats in the Old Laundry Bar.
