Developed from a collection of small settlements along one of Norfolk’s rivers, the Wensum, Norwich has ancient streets, stunning historic buildings, and a Norman heritage in its castle and cathedral. It’s regarded as the most complete medieval city in Britain, with 31 churches and many other buildings dating from the Middle Ages. The modern University of East Anglia (established 1963) is especially well known for its creative-writing programme established by Malcolm Bradbury and Angus Wilson (graduates include Kazuo Ishiguro and Ian McEwan), and has brought some extraordinary contemporary architecture to the city – in the pyramidal shape of Denys Lasdun’s ‘ziggurat’ student halls. Not to be outdone, Sir Norman Foster’s Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is an equally striking structure. When it comes to restaurants in Norwich, Roger Hickman’s is without doubt the best, though there is strong support for the French-style St Benedicts Restaurant, and the Bishop’s Dining Room and Wine Bar.
