There’s a bohemian feel to Fitzrovia, a tangle of charming streets with quirky private shops and restaurants, and it’s near-neighbour Bloomsbury, noted for fine Georgian and early Victorian terraces built around garden squares. University College London (UCL) occupies many buildings in the area, the British Museum draws the tourists, as does continued interest in the early 20th-century Bloomsbury Group, formed of artists and writers like Virginia Woolf and the economist John Maynard Keynes. Restaurants in Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury benefit from a spectacularly central London location and have something for everyone: plenty of Italian coffee shops and eateries, basic student haunts (Chilli Cool), excellent modern tapas (Fino), great Indian, French and even Peruvian choices (Lima). If it’s Michelin stars you’re after, there’s elegant haut cuisine at bijou Pied à Terre on Charlotte Street, and sensational cooking at Dabbous on Whitfield Street.
