Square Meal review of Thang Loi:
This stretch of Kingsland Road hardly needs another Vietnamese, but this newcomer’s USP is that it takes its inspiration from Hanoi & the north of the country, where the cuisine is lighter & less spicy. More cafe than restaurant, with vibrant red & blue walls, Thang Loi attracted many favourable reviews when it first opened opening but, like many a Vietnamese in this neck of the woods, the cooking is inconsistent. Spring rolls tasted anything but fresh, while banh tom ho tay (deep-fried sweet potato pancake with prawns) arrived very quickly & had more chew than crunch. Much better was Hanoi speciality cha ca la vong, a tasty sizzling dish of grilled monkfish marinated in galangal & saffron, loaded with dill & spring onions & accompanied by a potent shrimp sauce. Service from a young team is enthusiastic – hopefully the kitchen will find its feet.
