Where Canonbury suddenly turns the corner towards tattier Stoke Newington, The Alma makes a welcome contrast to some of its grotty neighbouring boozers. It’s a big & spacious pub divided into drinking & dining areas. There are bottles of Lion Red, bitter & lagers on draught, jugs of Sangria & a darn good Bloody Mary. On the food front it’s mostly hearty, comforting stuff: macaroni & cauliflower cheese, roast hake with saffron risotto & chorizo, sausage & bacon with potato hash & a fried egg. The owner is from New Zealand & tempts homesick Antipodeans with a variety of Kiwi treats such as Pineapple Lumps & Watties Tomato Sauce.
