From the same stable & template as Cinnamon Cay & The Abbeville, The Stonhouse marks yet another conversion from old boozer to pleasant, well-designed gastropub-cum-brasserie. Although its retro menu offers no real inspiration, the earthy cooking & well-chosen wines & beers comprise a winning formula. Begin with a sprightly starter of chicken livers & sauteed wild mushrooms with balsamic sauce on toast or a flavoursome goats’ cheese & courgette tart. To follow, the shepherd’s pie is hearty & fresh-tasting, while the barbecued pork ribs are indulgent & well worth getting your hands dirty for. The clientele is mainly well-heeled locals with a smattering of office types during lunchtimes.
