Square Meal review of Tom's Place:
This bright & kitsch fish-&-chip joint from Tom Aikens takes environmental issues seriously, serving fish only sourced from sustainable stocks. But while its heart is in the right place, serving unfashionable fish such as ling, ray & pollock, the quality of cooking is not such a good advert for the eco-friendly approach: deep-fried gurnard was lacking in flavour & stingily portioned for its £12.50 price-tag. On the plus side, the batter had the satisfying smack of being fried in beef dripping, the chunky chips were spot-on & the tartare sauce was fresh & tangy. As well as fish & chips, there’s a short list of grilled fish, such as megrim sole with a sweet & salty topping of capers, sultanas & onion, & 'bowl food' including bouillabaisse & fish pie. There are no starters & only ice-cream (served theatre-style in recyclable paper cups with wooden spoons) for dessert. A nice touch is that all the wines are English, including a good house white: a buttery but fruity Denbies Coopers Brook Chardonnay from Surrey. No reservations.
