Finding your way into this extraordinary Victorian megalith is the hard part, but once you’ve negotiated your way past the cobbled courtyard & a tidy little bar, the gothic dining room is a rather charming spot. As befits the name, classic French cooking is the order of the day: start with moules mariniere or rabbit terrine & follow with roast rack of lamb with rosemary or hearty tartiflette layered with wild boar sausages, chopped bacon & creamed potatoes. Lunchtimes are simpler, with local office workers & residents tucking in to croque monsieur & filled baguettes. The wine list veers away from France with some nice New World options, while the central courtyard with its all-weather awning & plentiful heaters is a picturesque dining option throughout the year.
