You’ll have to jostle with Yankee rucksacks at this historic inn, as The Mayflower (the clue is in the name) is a must for American visitors out to witness whence the Pilgrim Fathers set sail in 1620 (from an adjacent quay, to be precise). In recognition, Washington DC has licensed the pub to sell US stamps, though that’s not much use for firing a postcard off to your granny in Washington, Tyne and Wear, frankly. Cosy black-panelled snugs, oak beams, a working fire and nautical gubbins give it Jack Sparrow appeal. Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen are suitable whistle-wetters and a substantial food offer echoes the global travels of The Mayflower – there’s everything from curry to cajun chicken and springbok steaks.
