This established neighbourhood bistro is in the bit of Hackney that estate agents call Victoria Park Village & its style suits the middle-class professional milieu with its cream shades, exposed brick & lots of dark wood. The regulars appreciate the welcoming service & respectable cooking which ranges over the week from Saturday brunch to a £12 Sunday roast & intimate suppers. A meal might start with fried goats’ cheese with tomato & pine nut salad & balsamic vinaigrette, followed by grilled chicken breast wrapped in honey-roasted ham, leek mash & red-wine jus, finished off with rich, homemade sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce & ice-cream. The global wine list is fairly priced & there’s a lovely garden for summertime alfresco.
