‘Not for the faint-hearted’, Bar Shu delivers a full dose of Szechuan fire and mouth-numbing intensity, but also bags of ‘real taste’ – according to aficionados of this potent regional cuisine. ‘Excellent choices’ from the pictorial menus include fish-fragrant aubergines laced with spiced caramel, numbing-and-hot fish fillets and the ‘moreish weirdness’ of pock-marked old woman’s beancurd, while sides of phoenix-tail salad and smacked cucumbers help to temper the fires. Daring diners wanting a challenge can sample ‘bushtucker trial’ delicacies such as spiced pig’s intestines, chicken gizzards or unnervingly slithery jellyfish ribbons – although the serene dining room is a world away from I’m A Celebrity… with its ornate wooden arches, glowing red lanterns and traditional silk prints. ‘Surly’ staff have an unerringly ‘cool disdain’ for customers, but Bar Shu still holds an ‘addictive’ allure – just remember to bring a bulging wallet.
