Square Meal Review of Fifteen Trattoria ?

If you fancy visiting a celebrity chef’s place, but forgot to book, try Jamie’s Trattoria. The more-relaxed space above Mr Oliver’s restaurant reserves some tables for walk-ins. It’s open from 7.30am on weekdays, so you can pop in for a freshly made croissant & coffee, or fill up on the ‘full monty’. Prices for the handmade pasta & straightforward, gutsy mains (perhaps roasted pork chop with grilled marinated courgettes, fennel & aïoli) are slightly lower than downstairs, but you could simply graze on bold-flavoured antipasti. Make up your own board from a selection that might include Sicilian octopus stew on bruschetta, or marinated fillet of organic salmon ‘al carpione’. To drink, you’ll find a short list of cocktails with zingy seasonal variations, London beers (Meantime, Sambrook’s) & wines (mostly Italian) by the glass, bottle & 500ml carafe.

Child friendly. A much misused term in dining. It usually means child tolerant and even the best behaved of children will test the flexibility of a good restaurant. Our 10 year old was highly impressed at Fifteen Trattoria by the offer – “if you don't like what's on the menu we'll cook anything you want” but opted instead for a risotto. The fact that it was the wrong choice for her (way too much red wine) did not matter as we were genuinely grateful for the consideration.

As for the adults food – the anti pasti looks great and tastes great. There was unlimited bread and oil and the Gnocci with butternut squash was superb. Main courses fell away a little: the rib eye was fairly average and we have had way better duck, but the portions were very generous and again more than compensated for any slight grumbles. Personally I was happy with my slow cooked pork and very happy to see a grappa selection.

The Trattoria does not feel at all like part of a “celebrity” restaurant experience – even the pictures of Jamie are kept to a minimum. It really is more like a genuine Italian family restaurant – which is truly an achievement considering what might have been.

Total cost with a little wine for 3 adults and a child was £139.

I would go back. But the steak and duck did prompt my eldest daughter to say that “I wish you'd spent that £139 on a pair of boots – it would have given me a lot more pleasure”. So – sorry boys and girls of Fifteen – it just goes to prove that unless you are really out of the very top draw sometimes your real competitor is not A.N.Other restaurant but the High Street!
