Square Meal review of The Farm: ? Write your review

The Farm has gone through so many incarnations since first opening in 2004 that it’s difficult to know how long a particular chef & style of cuisine will last. A recent change of management has led to the introduction of a Gallic-leaning menu from which goats’ cheese mousse with pea puree & asparagus might be followed by roast cod in a stew of borlotti beans with home-roasted tomatoes. Creme brulée with pressed Granny Smith apple is a fittingly French finish, while the sturdy wine list has been sourced with care & is priced sensibly. One thing that doesn’t change is how the place looks, with wooden floors, fireplaces & large windows offering pleasant surrounds.

I recommend you avoid the Farm on a Chelsea match day. Seated in the restaurant our drinks took over 25 minutes to arrive, despite reminding the waiting staff several times. Eventually, the waitress told us that the bar staff had forgotten our order, but even still the drinks took another 10 minutes to arrive. Our first course took over 30 minutes to arrive, despite it being simple and rather bland soup. When our mains arrived an hour later they were barely warm. We were forced to leave without eating our desserts due to the time taken to deliver the rest of our food. I might understand if we were ordering a la carte, but it was a fixed price 3 course menu, so I would have expected a quick turn around. The Farm just can't cope with the pre-match demand.

Do not go to this Restaurant when Chelsea are playing at home. The set menu at £21.95 seems good value until you find out (the waiter informed us) that all the steaks and burgers have be pre-cooked and that you can only have them medium or well-done!!! The chips were also re-cooked – the kind you would get from a fish & chip shop and then heat up at home. In addition we were served white sliced bread to start – the excuse being they couldn't get any fresh bread on a Sunday morning – there is a bakery literally round the corner. We will not be returning.
